Sewing beanies became important to me when my mum was diagnosed with cancer. However, finding a stylish and easy-to-follow PDF pattern proved to be difficult as a beginner. Eventually, I found a free pattern on sewing org that had great measurements, but the instructions were confusing. Fortunately, our admin and sewing guru, Kiraleigh, helped me reword the instructions and perfect the pattern.
With my mum's beanie in hand, my daughters wanted one just like grandma's. So, we decided to include children's sizing and drafted the pattern with help from the amazing Liz from Thread Faction Studio. We hope this pattern can be a helpful resource for those who may need fool-proof instructions to make beanies for loved ones going through a difficult time.
We were moved by the support we received from the Fabric by Missy Rose Facebook Group. This small act of sewing and giving back to those in our local community is one way we can all make a difference. While we designed it to be a gift for loved ones, friends, and those who need a little extra heroism in their lives, we kindly ask that you do not use it for profit. Let's spread the love, one handmade Hero Halo at a time!

Thank you so much for this!
My sister has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and is due to start chemo soon. I will make some of these up for her and a few extra for her to take to the Oncology department at her local hospital in the UK so other women can cover up and keep warm in style. I may have to shout out for help with the pattern once I start, but it does look fairly simple at first glance. All will be made in TMGA/Fabric by Missy Rose that I have from my stash and scrap packs. :)
For joan on February 16, 2019, and anyone else wondering what type of fabric to use: you will want a knit fabric (as opposed to woven), that is stretchy and soft. The pattern says fabric with 50% stretch, which means if you hold a 4 inch piece, it will stretch to 6 inches. There are numerous websites that explain this in more detail, or the staff at a good fabric shop will be able to help you. Here at Material Girl Australia, look under Shop Bases of each of the knits, the French Terry and Double Brushed Poly, the Bamboo if the description states “Bamboo Lycra.” (NOTE: I don’t work here or have any interest in the shop, except for saying Thank You for the Hero Halo pattern. I’m in Texas, so I probably won’t ever order, either, because shipping! But those panels are all adorable!!) Love, Lili
